How to record demos

Demos play a major part in online gaming for various uses. They can be used as reference for tactics and tips as well as evidence for people cheating. This short tutorial will show you how to make a basic demo in Counter-Strike: 1.6.

1. Open Steam:
Opening Steam is required to do this. Double click the Steam icon on your desktop.

2. Open up Counter-Strike: 1.6:
The next step is to open up Counter-Strike: 1.6. Double click the game in your Steam Games list.

3. Open console:
The way to record a demo is to use console commands. You can open the console by pressing the ` key (located next to the number 1). The command record [demoname] [cd] is used to record demos. Only the [demoname] parameter is really required to record a demo, so we will only use this.

4. Starting the demo:
To start the recording, type record [demoname] in console. For example, record matt will save the file as matt.dem. Naming your demos will make it a lot easier to watch the correct ones.

5. Stopping the demo:
To stop recording, type stop in console. This will stop the demo and save it into your cstrike folder (this can be found at C:\Program Files\Steam\SteamApps\Username\Counter-Strike\cstrike by default). It will be named what you specified for [demoname] in part 4.
